I’ve watched more guests arrive in a skirt and top over the last two seasons than in the thirty years before. It started with a few satin skirts at summer weddings, and now I see matching sets at black-tie receptions. A good skirt outfit looks just as dressed-up as a gown, and you can dance in it.
Here are 19 skirt wedding guest outfits, from a pink satin maxi with a black ruffle top to a velvet wrap skirt for a winter chapel. Each one comes with the shoes and bag, the dress code it suits and the photo to take. I’ve marked the plus-size and petite picks, and I’ve noted which ones need a wrap for the ceremony.
Why skirts are everywhere
The runways. The spring 2027 shows in September and October were called a skirt renaissance. Prada built all 63 of its looks around a skirt, and AFP named modular fashion, outfits split into separate pieces, as a trend of the season. Dior and Chanel showed sheer organza, and Jacquemus paired midi skirts with matching tops.
The wedding editors. Who What Wear named two-piece sets one of six wedding guest trends for 2026, and called top-and-skirt outfits just as polished as a dress and easier to dance in. Marie Claire UK styled a red tulle skirt with a silky cami for formal weddings.
On Pinterest. Pinterest’s skirt wedding guest outfit trend peaked in early August and has held steady since. The searches around it are satin skirt wedding looks, midi and maxi skirt wedding outfits, and floral skirts. Pinterest’s 2026 wedding report has plum and olive weddings up 1,380 percent and merlot weddings 370 percent.
The practical case. Separates let you buy the top and skirt in different sizes. You can also wear each piece again on its own.
The rules I’d follow
Let the dress code set the hem. Mini to midi is fine for a casual or beach wedding. Cocktail means knee to midi in satin or lace. For black tie, go to the floor, and one bride Who What Wear spoke to said midis read too casual there.
Watch the skin. A Who What Wear stylist put it best: don’t wear anything to a wedding that you’d also wear to a club. A sliver of midriff is fine at a beach or cocktail wedding. For black tie, the top should meet the skirt.
Cover up for the ceremony. At a church or mosque, wear sleeves or bring a wrap and keep the neckline modest. Save sheer pieces for the reception.
No white. That includes ivory, and PEDESTRIAN.TV’s 2026 guide adds some champagnes. A deep champagne skirt with a black top reads as a guest. A pale one on its own can look bridal in photos.
Red is usually fine. The Knot says red works at most weddings, but it’s the bridal colour at many Indian, Pakistani and Chinese weddings, so check the couple’s website.
Plan for the ground. Wear block or low heels on grass and flats or wedges on sand. In winter, add a long coat. Full pouf skirts look great but are hard to sit in.
The looks from Pinterest (outfits 1 to 6)
1. Dusty pink satin maxi with a black ruffle top

The skirt: Topshop satin bias maxi skirt in pink, $54 at ASOS (listing price; for a fuller A-line, H&M’s peach pink flared satin maxi, price not confirmed).
The top: Topshop puff sleeve organza ruffle detail top in black, $70.
Finish with: Steve Madden Malcolm black patent T-strap block heels ($49.99, final sale), an ASOS zip-top pearl clutch ($54.99) and BaubleBar Santana shell pearl studs ($42).
Where it works: Cocktail evening wedding, spring 2027.
Photo to take: A full-length mirror selfie in the getting-ready suite.
This is the look at the top of Pinterest’s skirt wedding guest page, and the one I’d copy first. Black on top keeps the pink grown-up, and SS27 runways from Prada down were full of pinks.
2. Sage satin slip skirt with a sheer balloon-sleeve blouse

The skirt: Motel Garula satin lace hem midi skirt in sage, $66 at ASOS (listing price; a matching Chatura cami makes it a set).
The top: ARRANGE organza volume sleeve pleated cinched waist top in cream, $159 (cream only works because the skirt is clearly coloured).
Finish with: Loeffler Randall Dahlia pleated bow heels in champagne lamé ($350, 2 in heel) and a Cult Gaia Eviana pearlized clutch ($398) or an ASOS pearl beaded clutch ($63.99).
Where it works: Garden semi-formal wedding, spring 2027.
Photo to take: In an orangery in soft morning light.
Sage was in the SS27 shows’ soft palette, and Dior and Chanel sent sheer organza out all season. A low heel is my rule for anything on a lawn.
3. Rust lace midi with a lace corset at a garden villa

The skirt: Topshop satin and lace hanky hem midi skirt in rust, $80 at ASOS (it has a thigh-high split, so save it for the reception).
The top: Oh Polly Junia underwired lace corset top in black, 30 (was 60; check the currency, low stock), or the Mina lace corset in Fire Red.
Finish with: Loeffler Randall Priscilla cream heeled sandals ($395), a Loeffler Randall Helga brown suede knot clutch ($295, low stock) and BaubleBar Venus gold statement earrings ($42).
Where it works: Cocktail villa wedding, late spring 2027.
Photo to take: On a villa terrace at golden hour.
Lace was all over Dolce and Gabbana’s SS27 show, and this rust skirt is the nearest I found to the villa look on Pinterest. The split is high, so wear it for the party.
4. Burgundy chiffon maxi with a wine corset

The skirt: PrettyLittleThing burgundy ruched chiffon maxi skirt co-ord, $20.40 (was $68), sizes 0 to 12 (check the colour, since the description mentions black).
The top: Oh Polly Jemara lace-up corset top in Wine, 50 (check the currency); for more coverage, the ASOS DESIGN burgundy chiffon drape maxi skirt and matching cami ($23.99 and $39.18).
Finish with: Steve Madden Malcolm burgundy patent heels ($59.99, final sale), an ASOS chocolate satin clutch ($44.99) or a Loeffler Randall Zella croc clutch ($325) and BaubleBar Nova earrings ($48).
Where it works: Cocktail evening wedding, winter 2026.
Photo to take: In a candlelit wine cellar.
Merlot weddings are up 370 percent on Pinterest. A cropped corset shows a little skin, so this is for the reception, or add a wrap for a church ceremony.
5. Champagne silk maxi with a black cap-sleeve top

The skirt: Quince 100% washable silk maxi skirt in Champagne, $80 (or ASOS DESIGN satin lace hem maxi in champagne, $69.99).
The top: & Other Stories puff cap sleeve pleated top in black, $96.
Finish with: Loeffler Randall Rio black satin kitten heels ($395), a Loeffler Randall Rayne black organza bow clutch ($295) and BaubleBar Adeline pearl earrings ($22).
Where it works: Black tie optional evening wedding, spring 2027.
Photo to take: Walking down a grand hotel staircase.
Selena Gomez wore champagne as a guest this summer, but pale champagne can look ivory in photos. A black top keeps it clearly a guest look. I couldn’t find a champagne set with a matching cap-sleeve top, so this pairs two pieces.
6. Draped floral skirt with a navy knit

The skirt: Oh Polly Romy asymmetric ruched chiffon maxi skirt in Primrose Floral Print, 38 (check the currency; it’s a maxi, since the floral wrap midi I wanted is sold out).
The top: Quince lightweight cotton cashmere V-neck in Atlas Navy, $29.90.
Finish with: Loeffler Randall Dahlia pleated bow heels in blue ($350), the ASOS pearl clutch ($54.99) and Lele Sadoughi navy pansy earrings ($145).
Where it works: Daytime garden or church wedding, spring 2027.
Photo to take: On a balcony above the old town.
A sleeved knit on top covers you for the ceremony, and the floral skirt does the party. Pinterest’s related searches for this trend include floral skirt wedding guest looks.
Winter weddings (outfits 7 to 10)
7. Chocolate velvet wrap maxi with a burgundy cashmere crewneck

The skirt: Anthropologie Olivette velvet wrap maxi skirt in Chocolate, $198, XXS to XL in Standard and Petite.
The top: Quince Mongolian cashmere crewneck in Rich Burgundy, $50.
Finish with: Doen Giulia black velvet kitten heels ($348), a Staud Tommy beaded bag ($250), a Jennifer Behr black velvet bow barrette ($178) and a Topshop faux fur shawl jacket ($149).
Where it works: Semi-formal chapel wedding, winter 2026 (petite).
Photo to take: In a frosty chapel doorway.
Chocolate and burgundy are the colours of this winter, and velvet with cashmere is the warmest outfit here. The petite cut keeps the maxi off the floor.
8. Wine jacquard maxi with a burgundy lace corset

The skirt: Abercrombie high rise satin jacquard maxi skirt in Wine Brown Jacquard, $100.
The top: ARRANGE bonded lace structured corset top in burgundy, $159.
Finish with: Larroudé Lucia burgundy patent slingbacks ($425, final sale), a Loeffler Randall Brit black taffeta clutch ($250), Mango burgundy leather gloves ($79.99) and baroque pearl studs ($45).
Where it works: Black tie optional evening wedding, winter 2026.
Photo to take: In a candlelit hotel ballroom.
Who What Wear says brocade and jacquard make simple outfits feel dressier, and burgundy on burgundy looks deliberate. Add a wrap for the ceremony.
9. Burgundy satin bias maxi with a forest green top

The skirt: ASOS DESIGN Curve satin bias maxi skirt in burgundy, $45.
The top: Universal Standard Agatha liquid jersey top in Forest Green, $78, sizes to 4XL.
Finish with: ASOS Wide Fit silver bow kitten heels ($54.99), an ASOS chocolate satin clutch ($44.99), a burgundy velvet hair bow ($21) and olive faux leather long gloves ($39).
Where it works: Semi-formal evening wedding, winter 2026 (plus size).
Photo to take: In a conservatory strung with fairy lights.
Plum and olive weddings are up 1,380 percent on Pinterest, and burgundy with forest green is that palette in an outfit. Separates mean you can buy the top and skirt in different sizes.
10. Sequin slip maxi with a black knit bodysuit

The skirt: Anthropologie Tilda sequin slip maxi skirt, $158, in Silver or Black (only the Plus fit was still in stock).
The top: ARRANGE Curve soft knit long sleeve bodysuit, $95.
Finish with: Doen Giulia cobalt velvet kitten heels ($348), a Loeffler Randall Rayne gold lamé bow clutch ($295) and a Jennifer Behr topaz velvet bow barrette ($148).
Where it works: Black tie or New Year’s Eve wedding, winter 2026 (plus size).
Photo to take: At an Art Deco hotel bar.
Who What Wear’s advice for embellished skirts is to keep the top plain, and a knit bodysuit stays tucked on the dance floor. Cobalt shoes add the colour.
Plus size and petite favourites (outfits 11 and 12)
11. Light green tiered satin midi with a midnight peplum top

The skirt: Anthropologie satin tiered midi skirt in Light Green, $158, Standard, Petite and Plus.
The top: Universal Standard Flora liquid jersey top in Midnight, $118, sizes 3XS to 3XL.
Finish with: Larroudé Fiore black sandals ($330, final sale; swap to a block heel on lawns), the ASOS pearl beaded clutch ($63.99) and Lele Sadoughi mother-of-pearl lily earrings ($125).
Where it works: Semi-formal garden or church wedding, spring 2027 (plus size).
Photo to take: In a botanical garden glasshouse.
Who What Wear says separates are easier to dance in, and a peplum top sits nicely over a tiered skirt. Mint and sage were all over the SS27 shows.
12. Black lace maxi with a fig lace corset

The skirt: Princess Polly Castelli lace maxi skirt in black, petite, 69 (check the currency).
The top: Miss Selfridge button-through cinched corset top with lace in fig, $42.99.
Finish with: Larroudé Nara black pumps ($350, low heel), a Loeffler Randall Brit champagne clutch ($250) and a Lele Sadoughi jet cameo bow barrette ($135).
Where it works: Cocktail evening wedding, winter 2026 (petite).
Photo to take: On a city rooftop at blue hour.
Saint Laurent’s fall lace shows up in this black maxi, and fig adds the plum note. Check the couple hasn’t asked guests to skip black.
Cocktail and evening (outfits 13 and 14)
13. Amethyst taffeta midi with a black cashmere knit

The skirt: Free People Vernier taffeta midi skirt in Uncut Amethyst, $148, US 0 to 14.
The top: Quince Mongolian cashmere crewneck in black, $50.
Finish with: Larroudé Lucia black patent slingbacks ($425, final sale), a Cult Gaia Lia pearl satin mini clutch ($498) and a Jennifer Behr black Virginia bow barrette ($168).
Where it works: Cocktail wedding, winter 2026.
Photo to take: In a wood-panelled library venue.
Who What Wear ran a whole piece on black knits with satin taffeta skirts this fall. It has pockets, which every guest secretly wants.
14. Sequin paillette midi with a black organza shirt

The skirt: Staud Fen skirt in Afterglow, $550, sequin paillettes with a feathered hem.
The top: Topshop organza shirt in black, $70.
Finish with: Loeffler Randall Camellia gold lamé pleated bow heels ($395), a Loeffler Randall Brit gold lamé clutch ($250) and BaubleBar Nova earrings ($48).
Where it works: Cocktail evening wedding, summer 2027.
Photo to take: In a museum courtyard.
Etro sent sequinned skirts down the SS27 runway, and a sheer black shirt keeps this from going too far. Crystal heels are up 145 percent on Pinterest.
Sets, ceremonies and summer (outfits 15 to 19)
15. Floral plissé midi with its matching top

The skirt: Staud Noemi skirt in Superbloom Scarf, $225, pleated plissé.
The top: Staud Bryn top in the matching print (price not captured).
Finish with: Steve Madden Liandra champagne platform block heels ($119.95, 4.75 in), a Cult Gaia Eos pearl clutch ($398) and Lele Sadoughi paper lily earrings ($125).
Where it works: Daytime garden wedding, spring/summer 2027.
Photo to take: On a lemon-grove terrace.
Who What Wear named matching two-piece sets one of the wedding guest trends of 2026, and Prada’s SS27 pleats back it up. You’ll wear the skirt again on its own.
16. Navy polka-dot silk slip with an oxblood turtleneck

The skirt: Rixo Stassie skirt in Layla Dot Navy, 175 (probably pounds).
The top: Quince lightweight baby alpaca turtleneck in Oxblood Red, $70.
Finish with: Loeffler Randall Rio black satin kitten heels ($395), a Loeffler Randall Zella croc clutch ($325) and an ASOS black jacquard satin fringe scarf ($37.99).
Where it works: Semi-formal religious ceremony, winter 2026.
Photo to take: In a cathedral doorway.
Covered from neck to wrist, this is what I’d wear to a church, mosque or temple ceremony. PEDESTRIAN.TV’s 2026 guide calls it conservative but chic.
17. Aqua corset-and-maxi set for a beach wedding

The skirt: Tiger Mist Charlyze sequin-trim fishtail maxi skirt in aqua, part of a set from $128 at ASOS (fabric and sizes not shown).
The top: the matching Tiger Mist Charlyze bandeau lace-up corset top (or the Caline set in red and baby pink, from $138).
Finish with: Loeffler Randall Dahlia pearl bow heels ($350), the ASOS pearl clutch ($54.99), baroque pearl studs ($45) and a cream satin fringe scarf ($37.99) for the ceremony.
Where it works: Beach or destination wedding, summer 2027.
Photo to take: On a cliffside terrace at sunset.
Marie Claire styled a co-ord for beach weddings, and the beach is the one place a sliver of midriff is fine. Bring the scarf for the vows.
18. Chilli red chiffon maxi with a red satin corset

The skirt: Oh Polly Keona mid-rise split maxi skirt in Chilli Red, 32 (was 62; check the currency).
The top: Oh Polly Briella satin corset top in Fire Red, 55 (check the currency).
Finish with: Steve Madden Liandra black patent platform heels ($119.95), a Loeffler Randall Rayne gold lamé clutch ($295) and BaubleBar Adeline pearls ($22).
Where it works: Cocktail evening wedding, summer 2027.
Photo to take: On a Mediterranean rooftop at sunset.
Crimson was the colour seen most on the fall runways, and red on red is the boldest look here. Check first at Indian, Pakistani or Chinese weddings, where red is bridal.
19. Sunny yellow satin midi with a chocolate corset blouse

The skirt: Abercrombie high rise satin midi skirt in Sunny Yellow, $90 (also in Seafoam; for less, Princess Polly Somani satin midi, $41).
The top: Gina Tricot V-neck corset blouse in chocolate brown, $70.
Finish with: Loeffler Randall Dahlia champagne lamé bow heels ($350), the ASOS pearl beaded clutch ($63.99) and a Jennifer Behr cream Virginia bow barrette ($168).
Where it works: Daytime garden wedding, spring 2027.
Photo to take: In a wildflower meadow.
Butter and limone yellows were everywhere at the SS27 shows, and Who What Wear says brights are the guest colours of 2026. Chocolate keeps the yellow from looking sweet.
Plus size and petite
For plus sizes, the ASOS Curve burgundy satin maxi (outfit 9) is $45, and Universal Standard’s jersey tops in outfits 9 and 11 run to 3XL and 4XL. The Anthropologie sequin maxi (outfit 10) was only in stock in the plus fit, and its tiered satin midi (outfit 11) comes in plus too.
For petites, the Anthropologie velvet wrap maxi (outfit 7) and the Princess Polly lace maxi (outfit 12) are cut in petite lengths, so the hem sits at the floor without a tailor.
Before you buy
Rixo, Oh Polly and Princess Polly don’t show a currency on their product data, so check the price at checkout. ASOS didn’t show sizes or stock when I checked, and several Oh Polly corset tops are low in the core sizes. Larroudé and some Steve Madden shoes are final sale. A few prices came from search listings, which I’ve marked.
Where I’d start
If you only buy one skirt this season, make it a satin maxi in a colour you love, like the Quince silk in outfit 5 or the ASOS burgundy in outfit 9. With a black top it covers a winter evening wedding, and with a corset top it works for a summer cocktail reception.
