The smallest wedding I ever planned had eleven guests and a table for twelve in the back room of an Italian restaurant. The bride wore a slip dress she’d bought three weeks earlier, and she said yes to it in the first fitting room she walked into. I’ve planned weddings for four hundred since, and none of those brides looked happier.
A simple wedding calls for a dress that suits the room and moves when you do. Here are the 20 wedding dresses I’d suggest for a city hall, a backyard, a restaurant, a beach or an elopement, from a $59 lace mini to a $5,990 silk column.
Why so many brides are keeping it simple
It’s about money more than size. The Knot’s 2026 study found the average wedding still has 117 guests, but 40 percent of couples cut their guest list because of rising costs. The average dress costs $2,100, and the average wedding $34,200.
Small weddings are growing slowly. Weddings of 50 guests or fewer made up 18 percent of weddings in 2024, up from 10 percent in 2013, according to The Wedding Report.
City hall is busy. San Francisco City Hall hosts about 7,000 weddings a year, and courthouse slots in California fill as soon as they open.
A second look is trending. Zola’s 2026 report found couples adding a party dress for the reception, which pairs well with a simple ceremony dress.
What the runways say about simple dresses
I’ll be honest: minimalism isn’t the big runway story for 2027. Most of the spring 2027 shows went for corsets, feathers and sparkle, and Pinterest’s 2026 report is led by drop-waist corsets. Clean dresses never left, though. The looks that stayed are a 1990s silk slip inspired by Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy, which THE WED called the Love Story trend, minimal halters, satin slip gowns, and bridal separates and skirt suits from Danielle Frankel and Markarian. Who What Wear also called short wedding dresses the chicest trend of 2026.
Dua Lipa showed how to do it. She married at Old Marylebone Town Hall in May 2026 in an ivory Schiaparelli skirt suit with a wide-brimmed hat, white gloves and white heels.
Let the accessories do the work
Pinterest’s 2026 data is where a simple dress gets its wow. Fascinator searches are up 1,865 percent, Juliet cap veils 245 percent and pearl headdresses 225 percent. Ballerina heels are up 190 percent. For bouquets, fuzzy wire bouquets rose 1,275 percent, bouquet purses 1,015 percent and bouquets with no flowers 240 percent. Pick one statement piece and let the dress stay quiet.
What to wear for each kind of simple wedding
City hall. A mini, a tea-length dress, a jumpsuit or a suit, with a hat, a fascinator or a long veil.
Backyard. Tea-length tulle or a satin A-line with pockets, and low heels that won’t sink into the lawn.
Restaurant. A satin halter or a backless slip, with an updo and crystal heels.
Beach. Light bias satin or silk with a short train or none, and flat shoes.
Elopement. Something you can pack: slip satin or stretch crepe, with a scarf or cap that won’t blow away.
These are my suggestions from years of planning. I couldn’t find recent expert guides for each setting.
City hall, short and alternative (dresses 1 to 5)
1. Lace long-sleeve mini

The dress: A white eyelash lace long-sleeve mini dress with a crew neck, a sheer lace yoke and a figure-skimming fit ending above mid-thigh.
The back: A plain back with a hidden zip.
Where to find it: Lulus Arlet White Lace Long Sleeve Mini Dress, $59, XXS to XL (runs small; M and L were down to one left).
How I’d style it: A soft side part with glossy waves, a cathedral-length sheer tulle veil, white satin ballet-style low heels and a small bouquet of white ranunculus with a handwritten note tucked in.
A mini with a long veil is the courthouse formula stylists keep recommending. The lace sleeves make a $59 dress look bridal.
2. Square-neck chiffon mini with pearl bows
The dress: A white chiffon mini dress with a square neckline and pearl-embellished organza ties knotted into bows at the shoulders.

Where to find it: Birdy Grey Lexie Dress in White, $110, XXS to XXL and 0X to 3X.
How I’d style it: Pin-and-drop French curls, a small pearl headdress, plum satin low heels and a bouquet of beaded white flowers.
Birdy Grey is known for bridesmaids, but this white mini goes to 3X. Pinterest searches for pearl headdresses are up 225 percent.
3. Tea-length tulle A-line
The dress: A diamond white tulle A-line tea-length dress with a fitted bodice and a soft full skirt ending at mid-calf.

Where to find it: Azazie Zenia in Diamond White or Diamond White/Champagne, $239, sizes WD0 to WD30 (made to order in about 3 weeks).
How I’d style it: A low bun with a few loose strands, a lace Juliet cap veil, ivory ballerina flats and a fuzzy white chenille wire bouquet.
Tea length is easy to walk across grass in. Juliet cap searches are up 245 percent, and fuzzy wire bouquets are up 1,275 percent.
4. Satin tea-length with pockets
The dress: An ivory satin V-neck tea-length A-line dress with side pockets.

The back: A clean back with a zip.
Where to find it: David’s Bridal Satin V-Neck Tea Length A-Line Dress SDWG0970, about $400 per The Knot, sizes 0 to 26W (check the price on the page).
How I’d style it: A sleek low ponytail, a wide-brim ivory hat, crystal-embellished low heels and short white gloves and a small white satin bouquet purse filled with flowers.
Dua Lipa wore a hat and gloves with her town hall suit this year, and the look works with any simple dress. Bouquet purse searches are up 1,015 percent.
5. Wide-leg jumpsuit with a bow back
The dress: A white wide-leg jumpsuit with adjustable spaghetti straps, a seamed bodice, a fitted waist and pleated full-length legs.

The back: A wide sash tied in a big bow at the back.
Where to find it: Lulus Modern Sophistication White Tie-Back Wide-Leg Jumpsuit, $79, XS to XL (some sizes may be sold out).
How I’d style it: A sleek low bun with an earring chain, a long silk scarf tied loosely over her hair, clear crystal heels and a single stem of white calla lily.
Separates and suits were all over the spring 2027 runways. A jumpsuit gets you there for $79, and the bow at the back makes the photo.
Slip and satin under $600 (dresses 6 to 10)
6. Backless satin halter maxi
The dress: A white satin halter maxi dress with a soft cowl front and an A-line skirt that sweeps the floor.

The back: A fully backless cowl back closed with small button loops at the waist.
Where to find it: Lulus Meliana White Satin Halter Backless Maxi Dress, $79.20 on sale (was $99), XXS to XL.
How I’d style it: A high pammy updo with face-framing pieces, no veil, crystal low heels and a small bunch of white sweet peas with a ribbon.
Minimal halters were one of the clean looks on the spring 2027 runway. A backless halter gives a restaurant wedding its moment when you turn around.
7. Satin maxi with a pearl tie back
The dress: A white satin V-neck maxi dress with a princess-seamed bodice, pearl-embellished straps and a high banded waist.

The back: A V-back with pearl straps and a satin sash tied in a bow.
Where to find it: Lulus Ready For Forever White Satin Pearl Tie-Back Maxi Dress, $148, XXS to XL (runs slightly large).
How I’d style it: A soft side part with pearl pins, a short pearl-edged veil, ivory ballet heels and a loose bouquet of white roses and greenery.
The pearl straps make it feel special without any lace or beading. Ballerina heel searches are up 190 percent, and they suit soft garden lawns.
8. Charmeuse A-line with a court train
The dress: An antique white charmeuse A-line gown with a soft court train that falls like a slip dress.

Where to find it: Azazie Marielle in Antique White, $179 (I only saw this one on the listing page).
How I’d style it: Loose beachy waves, a draped silk scarf veil, flat white leather sandals and a bouquet of dried grasses with no flowers.
Charmeuse moves in the wind, which makes it an elopement dress. Bouquets with no flowers are up 240 percent on Pinterest.
9. Strapless stretch satin sheath
The dress: A diamond white strapless stretch satin floor-length sheath.
Where to find it: Azazie Samantha in Diamond White, $179, sizes WD0 to WD30 (made to order).

How I’d style it: A sleek bun, no veil, plum satin heels and a cropped white tailored blazer over her shoulders and a white satin bouquet purse.
A blazer over a strapless sheath is a spring 2027 runway look. Take the blazer off for the reception photos.
10. Silk halter column
The dress: An ivory silk charmeuse halter column dress, slim and floor length.

The back: An open back.
Where to find it: Reformation Dorcas Silk Dress, $598, limited-edition bridal (check sizes).
How I’d style it: A tortoiseshell headband with hair down, a draped silk scarf veil, ivory ballet flats and a single stem of white peony.
This is the closest verified dress to Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy’s 1996 slip, which inspired spring 2027’s Love Story trend.
Crepe and clean lines (dresses 11 to 15)
11. Crepe-back satin sheath with a court train
The dress: A diamond white crepe-back satin sheath with lace detail and a court train.

Where to find it: Azazie Maxine in Diamond White, $399, sizes WD0 to WD30 (plus sizes were out of fabric when I checked).
How I’d style it: Pin-and-drop curls, a lace Juliet cap veil, crystal low heels and a bouquet of beaded white flowers.
Crepe-back satin holds its shape and hides creases, which helps if you’re travelling to your wedding.
12. Square-neck crepe with a button back
The dress: A stretch crepe square-neck fit-and-flare gown with wide straps, a Basque waist and a cathedral train.

The back: A dramatic low open back with a row of fabric-covered buttons.
Where to find it: Justin Alexander square-neck crepe fit-and-flare (listed as Ford) at Kleinfeld, price on request, samples 6 to 26.
How I’d style it: A low chignon, a long cathedral veil, ivory ballet heels and a fuzzy white chenille wire bouquet.
A square neck and covered buttons are classic shapes I keep coming back to. Kleinfeld carries samples up to size 26.
13. Crepe sheath with a V-cutout back
The dress: A stretch crepe square-neck sheath gown with thin straps and a chapel train.

The back: A fully open back with side straps outlining a V-shaped cutout and covered buttons running down to the end of the train.
Where to find it: Justin Alexander Signature BURR at Kleinfeld, price on request (sizes 18 and up may cost more).
How I’d style it: A sleek low bun, a small birdcage fascinator, plum satin heels and a handwritten note bouquet with a few white roses.
Shoot this one from behind on the stairs. Fascinator searches are up 1,865 percent, the biggest accessory jump in Pinterest’s report.
14. Long-sleeve crepe with an open back
The dress: A stretch crepe long-sleeve fit-and-flare gown with a softly draped sweetheart neckline and a chapel train.

The back: A low open back framed by sheer illusion with fabric-covered buttons.
Where to find it: Justin Alexander Signature long-sleeve crepe fit-and-flare (listed as Norma) at Kleinfeld, price on request, samples 6 to 26.
How I’d style it: A soft side part, a lace Juliet cap veil, crystal low heels and a bouquet of beaded white flowers.
Sleeves make a simple dress right for a winter elopement or a cold city hall.
15. Strapless crepe with draped pleats
The dress: An ivory stretch crepe strapless gown with hand-draped pleats at the bust and an 80cm train with a bustle.

The back: Satin-covered buttons along the curve of the back.
Where to find it: Grace Loves Lace Phoebe, $3,200, XS to 5XL (made to order, ships in 5 months).
How I’d style it: A high pammy updo, a pearl headdress, crystal heels and a white satin bouquet purse.
Phoebe is the only Grace Loves Lace gown here that goes to 5XL. Order early: it takes 5 months.
Designer splurges (dresses 16 to 20)
16. Backless crepe with a silk bow
The dress: A fresh ivory stretch crepe column gown with a scooped neck and wide straps, flaring softly at the hem into an 80cm train.

The back: A low open back with satin buttons and a detachable silk bow with long tails.
Where to find it: Grace Loves Lace Martini, $2,900, US 4 to 16 (made to order, 5 months).
How I’d style it: A low bun so the bow shows, a short veilette, ivory ballet heels and a handwritten note bouquet with white tulips.
The bow comes off for dancing. It’s the only verified removable bow back I found.
17. Bias satin with a cowl back
The dress: A pearlescent ivory bias-cut satin column gown with a high pleated neck and an 80cm train.

The back: A low open back with a soft draped cowl.
Where to find it: Grace Loves Lace Tia, $2,600, US 4 to 16 (made to order, 5 months).
How I’d style it: A slicked-back bun, a draped silk scarf veil, ivory ballet flats and a bouquet of dried grasses with no flowers.
Bias satin skims the body and moves when you walk. It’s another strong match for the 1990s slip mood.
18. Halter column with a side split
The dress: A pearlescent ivory satin halter column gown with a deep draped cowl V-neck, adjustable halter ties, a side split and an 80cm train.

The back: A low V open back.
Where to find it: Grace Loves Lace Suki, $2,600, US 4 to 16 (made to order, 5 months).
How I’d style it: A sleek bun with an earring chain, a small fascinator, crystal heels and a white satin bouquet purse.
Jazz club wedding searches are up 1,115 percent on Pinterest. A halter column is made for that room.
19. Crepe cowl neck fit-and-flare
The dress: An ivory stretch crepe Old Hollywood fit-and-flare gown with a draped cowl neck, thick straps and an 80cm train.

The back: An open scoop back with satin-covered buttons.
Where to find it: Grace Loves Lace Grace, $3,200, US 4 to 16 (made to order, 5 months).
How I’d style it: Vintage Hollywood waves and a red lip, a pearl headdress, plum satin heels and a bouquet of beaded white flowers.
Vintage Hollywood makeup searches are up 395 percent. A cowl neck and a red lip feel like an old film.
20. Silk satin column with a chiffon overlay
The dress: An ivory silk crepe-back satin column gown with a silk chiffon overlay and a deep V-neck with a tie.

The back: A plain back with an invisible zip.
Where to find it: Danielle Frankel Samira, $5,990, sizes 0 to 12 (every size showed as sold out or made to order when I checked, with a long lead time).
How I’d style it: A sharp low bun, a sculpted silk cap, ivory ballet heels and a single stem of white calla lily.
Danielle Frankel makes the most architectural simple dresses I know. If it’s unavailable, a lace mini from Azazie gives the same clean line for $129.
Plus-size brides
Azazie makes dresses from size WD0 to WD30 and offers custom sizing, Birdy Grey goes to 3X, David’s Bridal to 26W, and Grace Loves Lace’s Phoebe to 5XL. Kleinfeld carries Justin Alexander samples up to size 26. Lulus stops at XL, and most Grace Loves Lace gowns stop at US 16. For more ideas, see my plus-size wedding dresses guide.
What simple wedding dresses cost
Under $200. Lulus from $59, Birdy Grey at $110 and Azazie from $179.
$200 to $600. Azazie at $239 and $399, David’s Bridal at about $400 and Reformation at $598.
$2,600 to $3,200. Grace Loves Lace, made to order in about five months.
Splurge. Danielle Frankel at $5,990. Justin Alexander at Kleinfeld is priced on request.
I couldn’t find a simple dress between $600 and $2,600 to check, which is right where the average bride spends, so it’s worth trying on at a local salon too.
Where I’d start
For city hall, I’d buy the $59 Lulus lace mini and spend the savings on a long veil and a good photographer. For a restaurant or a beach, try a satin slip or halter. And if you have five months and a bigger budget, Grace Loves Lace makes the cleanest backs I’ve seen. Whichever you choose, turn around in the mirror before you buy, because at a small wedding everyone is close enough to see the back.
With love,
Laura Everly Sterling, Glimmering Events
