9 Second Wedding Dress Ideas for a Bride Who Knows Exactly Who She Is

One of my favourite brides got married for the second time at fifty-four, in a champagne satin dress with a cowl neck, in her own back garden. Her grown son walked her down a path of stepping stones, and her granddaughter threw petals with more enthusiasm than accuracy. She told me afterwards that the first time she had worn what everyone expected. This time she wore what she wanted.

That is the joy of a second wedding dress. You know your body and the kind of day you want. After thirty years of planning weddings, I have helped many brides marry again, and the dresses they chose were often braver and more personal than anything they wore the first time. Here are nine ideas that keep coming up, from a blush ballgown to a jumpsuit for the courthouse.

Can you wear white for a second wedding?

Yes. The old idea that white belongs only to first-time brides has gone, and most planners and bridal shops will tell you the same. Wear white, ivory, champagne, blush or a colour you love. A veil is fine too, and so is a big bouquet and a full updo. The only rule is that the dress should feel like the person you are today.

Before you shop

Don’t compare. Your second dress can look like your first or nothing like it. Neither choice is a statement about your first marriage.

Shop differently. If last time was a big group at a busy salon, try one close friend, a private appointment or online shopping with home try-ons.

Think about the setting. Second weddings are often smaller, at home, in a garden or at city hall. Match the length and fabric to the place.

Ignore age rules. You do not need to shop the mother-of-the-bride rail. Wear the dress that makes you feel confident at any age.

Classic, but on your terms (dresses 1 to 3)

1. Champagne satin sheath

The dress: a champagne satin sheath dress with a soft cowl neckline, thin straps, a low scooped back and a floor-length column skirt.

Sleek and grown-up, and champagne flatters almost every skin tone. This is the dress from my garden-wedding story, and it works just as well at a restaurant dinner reception.

2. Blush ballgown with an asymmetric neckline

The dress: a pale blush tulle ballgown with an asymmetric one-shoulder neckline, a fitted bodice with fine sparkle and a full layered skirt.

If you missed out on the big dress the first time, or simply want it again, go for it. Blush feels fresh and the one-shoulder neckline keeps it modern.

3. Off-the-shoulder lace gown

The dress: an ivory lace A-line gown with an off-the-shoulder neckline, soft scalloped lace edges and a full skirt with a short train.

Romantic and classic without being fussy. If you like a little more coverage, a high neck wedding dress gives a similar lace look with a covered neckline.

Softer and shorter (dresses 4 to 6)

4. Vintage tea-length

The dress: an ivory tea-length fit-and-flare dress with a sweetheart neckline, wide straps and a full tulle skirt that ends mid-calf.

A tea-length dress feels a little 1950s and very easy to wear. It shows off your shoes, too. My short wedding dress guide has more lengths if you like the idea.

5. Ruched crepe wrap dress

The dress: an ivory crepe wrap midi dress with ruching at the waist, a V-neckline and short flutter sleeves.

Ruching and a wrap front create shape without anything tight or structured. It is one of the most comfortable dresses on this list for a long day.

6. Sky blue sheath for the courthouse

The dress: a pale sky blue crepe sheath dress that ends just below the knee, with sculpted shoulders and a square neckline.

Who said it has to be white? A soft colour looks lovely in city hall photos. For more clean, simple shapes, see my simple wedding dresses.

Modern alternatives (dresses 7 to 9)

7. Tailored jumpsuit

The dress: an ivory crepe jumpsuit with a halter neckline, a keyhole back and wide palazzo legs.

Jumpsuits are a favourite for second weddings and elopements. You can dance, sit on the floor with the grandchildren and still look polished in every photo.

8. Lace crop top and full skirt

The dress: an ivory two-piece with a cropped lace top with cap sleeves and a high-waisted full satin skirt with pockets.

A two-piece is playful and very practical, since you can wear the skirt or the top again. It also makes a great outfit change; see my wedding reception dresses for more ideas.

9. Floral boho maxi

The dress: an ivory chiffon maxi dress with soft blush floral embroidery scattered across the skirt, a V-neckline and long sheer bell sleeves.

For a garden, vineyard or beach ceremony, this one is relaxed and romantic. The embroidery keeps it special without needing a train.

Including your family

Many second weddings bring families together. Some brides have their children walk them down the aisle, give a short reading or help with the rings. If your children are young, a little matching detail, like a flower crown or a ribbon in your dress colour, helps them feel part of the day.

Comfortable shoes matter more than you think when you are chasing small guests or dancing with your new family. My list of the 10 best comfortable wedding shoes has plenty of options that still look bridal.

Where I’d start

Decide on the setting first, then pick a group. For a formal venue, start with dresses 1 to 3. For a small ceremony or city hall, look at 4 to 6. If you want something that feels completely different from last time, go straight to 7 to 9. Try at least one option you would never have chosen before. Second-time brides surprise themselves more often than you would think.
