A bride once told me she’d ruled out strapless because she was sure she’d spend the night pulling it up. Then she tried on a gown with a proper boned corset inside, raised both arms over her head, and it didn’t move. She wore it for eleven hours, danced barefoot, and never touched the neckline once.
Strapless isn’t the runway headline this year. Designers are pushing halters, plunges and thin straps. But strapless is still everywhere in the collections, and it’s the base for the details everyone is talking about: sculpted sweetheart bodices, corsets, basque and drop waists, and bows. Here are 41 strapless gowns, from $128 to couture, with the back of every dress, because that’s what your guests see for the whole ceremony.
What’s new in strapless
Sculpted sweethearts. The sweetheart still leads, now often softly structured with folded points. Straight-across necklines come second, and tulip and cat-eye shapes are the designer twists.
Corsets and basque waists. Exposed boning, pointed basque waists and drop waists ran through every bridal fashion week this year. Pinterest searches for corseted drop-waist gowns rose 1,405 percent.
Bows. The clearest detail of all three seasons: big structural bows at the hip, the back or the waist, sometimes detachable.
The ballgown is back. Most of the strapless gowns at the spring 2027 shows were ballgowns.
Colour. Ivory and off-white are still the base. Blush is the leading colour that isn’t white, with butter yellow and pale blue coming up.
Fabrics. Structured satin, mikado and jacquard for sculpted bodices, and lace, which Vogue Singapore calls the wedding fabric of 2027.
Will a strapless dress stay up?
Yes, if it’s built properly. Every bridal source I read agrees: the boned corset inside holds the dress up, not the fabric. Look for vertical boning, a bodice fitted to your ribcage, a firm waist and a silicone gripper along the top edge. Test it in the fitting room by raising your arms, bending, twisting and sitting down.
Bigger bust. Julie Mersine Romeli of Mira Couture recommends extra boning, a notched neckline over a plunge, and built-in cups slightly smaller than your measurement. UK designers agree that with a bigger bust, corsetry is everything.
To bra or not. Designers say a well-built bodice replaces a bra. Kleinfeld’s alterations team wants you to wear a real strapless or longline bra at every fitting. My advice: decide at the first fitting and wear exactly the same thing every time.
Plan your fittings. Budget two to three fittings and order nine to twelve months ahead. Stick-on bras can slip in the heat, so test them before the day.
On the day. Justin Alexander suggests dry skin and a little baby powder, stepping into the gown from the bottom, lacing or zipping it snug and a strip of fashion tape at the neckline.
Plus-size brides. Strapless works for plus sizes more often than its reputation suggests. Essense of Australia goes up to size 34, and Justin Alexander Cooper, Jenny Yoo Lafayette and ELOQUII go to 32.
Classic and budget (gowns 1 to 9)

Where to find it: Azazie Adelise, $439, with a plus-size version.

Wedding day styling: A sleek low bun, a berry lip, a long faux fur stole and drop earrings.
For a winter wedding, a faux fur stole keeps your shoulders warm outside. The butter yellow bow is a small nod to the new pastels.
How to accessorise a strapless gown
Necklace or earrings. Either wear a short necklace at the throat or collarbone, or skip the necklace and let your earrings be the statement. A sweetheart neckline suits a pearl strand or a pendant that follows its curve, and a straight neckline suits a choker.
Hair and earrings together. With an updo, go for drops or chandeliers. With your hair down, choose studs or short drops, and soft waves will fill in your bare shoulders.
The veil. A bare bodice leaves room for a statement veil. Cathedral veils run about 108 to 120 inches and fingertip about 36 to 45.
Body makeup. Makeup artist Katie Quinn suggests a little contour above and below the collarbone and a touch of shimmer on the bone.
Covering up for church or the cold
A strapless gown can become two looks. Detachable lace sleeves, a sheer jacket, a cape or a bolero cover your shoulders for the ceremony and come off for the reception. In winter, a faux fur stole or bolero keeps you warm outside. Buy the cover-up with the gown and take it to your fittings, so it matches and can be secured.
Where I’d start
If you’re shopping on a budget, try the Azazie Adelise or Samantha first. If you want something on trend, look for a sculpted sweetheart or a basque waist with a bow at the back. And whatever you choose, raise your arms in the fitting room. If the bodice stays where it is, you’ve found a strapless that will last all night.
With love,
