17 Holiday Party Dresses for 2026, From the Office Party to a New Year’s Wedding

December is the busiest month of my year that has nothing to do with my own clients’ weddings. There’s the office party and Christmas dinner, and then the wedding events that land in the holidays, from engagement parties to the New Year’s Eve wedding that someone always has. Nearly half of all proposals happen between late November and mid-February, so if you’re invited to one engagement party this season, you’ll probably be invited to two.

Every one of those needs a slightly different dress, and the etiquette changes between them. Here are 17 holiday party dresses for 2026, each matched to the event it suits best, with the coat, shoes and bag to go with it and the photo to take. Prices run from $69 to $595, and I’ve marked the plus and petite picks.

What’s in for the holidays this year

Crimson first. Hypebeast counted crimson as the colour seen most on the fall 2026 runways, and Valentino closed its show in head-to-toe red. Who What Wear’s fall colour report adds burgundy, plum and chocolate, which it calls the new foundation shade, plus navy, which it says can stand in for black.

Velvet, satin and lace. NET-A-PORTER’s fall report shows strapless velvet, lace in inky tones, which it calls gothic romance, and ornate brocade. Max Mara put long gloves on every one of its 45 looks.

Sparkle in one place. The most recent holiday runway guide from Harper’s Bazaar mixes velvet with a single sequin piece. For weddings, The Zoe Report prefers shimmer or beading over a fully sequinned dress. New Year’s Eve weddings are the exception, where The Knot says sequins are close to the default.

On Pinterest. The 2026 predictions show ’80s luxury up 225 percent, brooches up 110 percent and opera outfits up 55 percent. Pinterest’s 2026 wedding report has plum and olive weddings up 1,380 percent, merlot weddings 370 percent and jazz club weddings 1,115 percent. That report doesn’t single out winter, but those colours and venues are what I’m seeing booked for December.

Dress codes, decoded

Festive attire. Cocktail length with something holiday about it: a jewel tone, red, velvet or a little sparkle. MasterClass says to skip the plain black dress and anything floor-length, which reads as black tie.

The office party. The Zoe Report’s stylists say to wear lengths you’d wear around colleagues and to keep sparkle to one piece. Emily Post’s rule is to err on the side of elegance, and Seattle Magazine says to dress like the most senior person in the room. Skip stilettos and carry a bag on your shoulder so your hands are free.

Black tie and black tie optional. Black tie means floor length. Black tie optional sits between a dressy midi and a gown.

Wedding events. No white or cream at any wedding event, engagement parties included. The Knot says red is fine at most weddings and suggests burgundy or maroon in winter, but check the couple’s website first, because red is the bridal colour at many Indian, Pakistani and Chinese weddings.

How to stay warm without hiding the dress

Pick a fabric with weight to it, like velvet, satin or brocade, and long sleeves where you can. Wear a long wool or faux fur coat, because WeddingWire says a puffer looks too casual over a formal dress. Add tights, which are a trend in their own right this fall. For anything with a lot of standing, kitten heels or velvet flats will get you through the night.

Red and burgundy (looks 1 to 6)

1. Crimson satin maxi for a December wedding

Buy it: ASOS DESIGN Curve pleated gathered bodice satin maxi dress with high neck in deep red, $75 (size range not shown).

Wear it with: The ASOS longline funnel-neck faux fur coat in dark brown ($159), ASOS Wide Fit silver bow slingback kitten heels ($54.99), the ASOS chocolate satin grab clutch ($44.99) and BaubleBar Barbra gold pearl drops ($68).

Where it works: December wedding guest.

Photo to take: On chapel steps at dusk, the coat slipping off one shoulder.

Crimson was the colour seen most on the fall 2026 runways. The Knot says red is fine at most weddings, but check the couple’s website first, since red is the bridal colour at many Indian, Pakistani and Chinese weddings.

2. Ruby satin mini for the office party

Buy it: Abercrombie High Neck Satin Mini Dress in Rich Ruby, $80 (it’s unclear whether this includes a 25% promotion), XXS to XL in Petite, Regular and Tall; flagged Almost Gone.

Wear it with: Opaque black tights, Steve Madden Berkleigh wide-calf boots ($90.97), the ASOS short collared faux fur jacket in light brown ($94.99) and BaubleBar Elizabeth pearl drops ($48).

Where it works: Office holiday party.

Photo to take: A mirror selfie in the office elevator.

The Zoe Report’s stylists say to keep to lengths you’d wear around colleagues. A high neck, black tights and boots keep a mini office-appropriate, and the petite cut stops it from riding up.

3. Pinot satin gown for a jazz-club New Year’s wedding

Buy it: Staud Estelle Dress in Pinot, $595 (probably USD; the neckline is described as both one-shoulder and halter).

Wear it with: The Hutch Janet faux fur coat with velvet bows ($319), Doen Giulia velvet kitten heels in black ($348) and the Staud Tommy beaded bag in Black Millefiori ($250).

Where it works: New Year’s Eve wedding, black tie optional.

Photo to take: In a speakeasy booth with brass lamps.

Jazz club weddings are up 1,115 percent and merlot weddings 370 percent on Pinterest. The beaded bag gives you the New Year’s sparkle without a sequin dress.

4. Backless burgundy velvet midi for a friends’ party

Buy it: Lulus Va Va Voom Burgundy Velvet Backless Long Sleeve Midi Dress, $69, XXS to XXL (only 3 left in XXS and 2 in XXL).

Wear it with: Sheertex cherry semi-opaque tights ($49), the ASOS silver bow kitten heels ($54.99), an Accessorize burgundy velvet hair bow ($21), BaubleBar Adeline pearls ($22) and the ASOS light brown faux fur jacket ($94.99).

Where it works: Friends’ holiday party.

Photo to take: From behind by the tree, looking back over one shoulder.

Elle’s holiday guide is full of cranberry and crimson velvet. The whole look, coat included, comes in under $320, and the open back is the bit everyone remembers.

5. Lace-trimmed velvet tea dress for Christmas dinner

Buy it: ASOS DESIGN Petite velvet mini tea dress with lace trims in burgundy, $70 (size range not shown).

Wear it with: Opaque black tights, Rothy’s Cruiser Mary Janes in navy velvet ($125) and the Lele Sadoughi jet cameo velvet bow barrette ($135).

Where it works: Family Christmas dinner.

Photo to take: Seated at the table during dessert.

Lace trims on velvet are one of Who What Wear’s fall dress trends. Flat shoes matter at a long family dinner, and the petite fit keeps the tea-dress waist where it belongs.

6. Maroon satin midi for the rehearsal dinner

Buy it: Rixo Maeva Dress in Maroon, 315 (probably pounds; Rixo’s sizes run to UK 26).

Wear it with: The Rixo Carlia burgundy velvet jacket (365, probably pounds), Doen Eleni chocolate suede Mary Jane flats ($298) and the Staud Maude shoulder bag in Espresso ($395).

Where it works: Rehearsal dinner.

Photo to take: Mid-toast in a private dining room.

The Knot suggests burgundy or maroon at winter weddings, and the rehearsal dinner is the night to try it. A velvet jacket on top is warmer than a wrap and looks more finished.

Chocolate and plum (looks 7 to 9)

7. Cocoa velvet column for a daytime winter wedding

Buy it: BHLDN Francesca High-Neck Stretch Velvet Maxi Dress in Cocoa, $171 on sale (was $228), XXS to XXL, standard fit only; also in Wine Tasting.

Wear it with: The ASOS dark brown longline faux fur coat ($159), Doen Giulia black velvet kitten heels ($348), BaubleBar Barbra pearls ($68) and a brooch at the collar.

Where it works: Daytime winter wedding guest.

Photo to take: In a snowy courtyard.

Who What Wear calls chocolate the new foundation shade, and brooch searches are up 110 percent on Pinterest. A high neck and long column mean you won’t feel the cold in the church.

8. Plum drop-waist velvet gown with olive gloves

Buy it: Lulus Perez Plum Velvet Asymmetrical Maxi Dress, $99, XS to XL.

Wear it with: My Accessories long ruched faux leather gloves in olive ($39), the ASOS dark brown longline faux fur coat ($159) and Doen Giulia black velvet kitten heels ($348).

Where it works: Black-tie-optional winter wedding.

Photo to take: On a lodge porch under string lights.

Plum and olive weddings are up 1,380 percent on Pinterest, and corseted drop-waist dresses 1,405 percent. The skirt is chiffon, which WeddingWire says is too light for winter, so keep the coat on outside.

9. Plum bias satin midi for an engagement party

Buy it: ASOS DESIGN Curve lace applique grown-on sleeve bias cut satin midi dress in plum, $69.99 (listing details only).

Wear it with: Steve Madden Berkleigh wide-calf boots ($90.97), the 4th & Reckless burgundy faux fur belted maxi coat ($260) and BaubleBar Elizabeth earrings ($48).

Where it works: Holiday engagement party.

Photo to take: In a wine bar by the champagne tower.

The Knot says engagement parties are usually cocktail and knee-length or longer, and suggests boots in winter. Plum wedding themes are up 630 percent on Pinterest.

Emerald and green (looks 10 to 12)

10. Emerald velvet bow column for a cocktail party

Buy it: Lulus Florentina Emerald Green Velvet Backless Bow Midi Dress, $75, XXS to XL; also in burgundy and black.

Wear it with: ASOS sheer glitter tights ($19.99), Doen black velvet Mary Jane slippers ($208), the Staud Tommy beaded bag ($250) and the Rixo Denver black velvet jacket (365, probably pounds).

Where it works: Holiday cocktail party.

Photo to take: At a hotel bar, bow to camera.

Valentino’s bottle-green velvet with a bow was the look of Harper’s Bazaar’s holiday runway guide. This is the same idea for $75, with the bow on the back.

11. Emerald corset mini for a friends’ New Year’s

Buy it: Lace & Beads Petite bow arm detailing corset velvet mini dress in emerald green, $96.20 (was $148), sizes not shown.

Wear it with: ASOS sheer glitter tights ($19.99), the ASOS silver bow kitten heels ($54.99) and the ASOS light brown faux fur jacket ($94.99).

Where it works: Friends’ New Year’s Eve party (not a wedding).

Photo to take: On a rooftop at midnight with sparklers.

Corset and basque waists are on Who What Wear’s fall list, and ’80s luxury is up 225 percent on Pinterest. It’s short and off the shoulder, so keep it for friends, not a wedding.

12. Dark green lace maxi for an evening winter wedding

Buy it: Rixo Biba Dress in Dark Green, 425 (probably pounds).

Wear it with: The Rixo Denver black velvet jacket (365, probably pounds), Doen Giulia black velvet kitten heels ($348) and BaubleBar Barbra pearls ($68).

Where it works: Evening winter wedding guest.

Photo to take: In a conservatory at blue hour.

NET-A-PORTER calls this season’s lace gothic romance. Long sleeves and a full length mean you’re warm without a coat, and lace wedding gloves are up 95 percent on Pinterest if you want to go further.

Chocolate, navy and midnight for New Year’s (looks 13 to 15)

13. Chocolate satin one-shoulder maxi for a New Year’s wedding

Buy it: Lulus Signature Elegance Chocolate Brown Satin One-Shoulder Maxi Dress, $74.25 or $99 (the two pages disagree), XXS to XXL and 1X to 3X; 11 colours.

Wear it with: The ASOS chocolate satin clutch ($44.99), the ASOS Wide Fit silver bow kitten heels ($54.99) and the Hutch Janet faux fur coat ($319).

Where it works: New Year’s Eve wedding.

Photo to take: Under a mirror ball at the countdown.

Parade’s stylists name chocolate for winter weddings, and chrome wedding searches are up 340 percent, so silver shoes fit. It’s the only Lulus dress I could confirm in plus sizes. Skip the white colourway for any wedding.

14. Navy crepe midi for a formal office party

Buy it: Staud Amelie Dress in Navy, $450 (probably USD).

Wear it with: The Hill House Evalina navy jacket ($298), Rothy’s navy velvet Mary Jane flats ($125) and the Staud Maude shoulder bag in Espresso ($395).

Where it works: Office party at a formal firm.

Photo to take: In a conference room with city lights behind.

Who What Wear says navy can replace black this year. Emily Post’s rule for office parties is to err on the side of elegance, and a shoulder bag keeps your hands free for a drink.

15. Midnight brocade column for a black-tie New Year’s wedding

Buy it: Hill House The Alberta Dress in Midnight Flocked Brocade, $498 (named Midnight but the link says black, so check the shade).

Wear it with: Doen Giulia velvet kitten heels in Cobalto ($348), the Hutch Janet faux fur coat ($319) and BaubleBar Barbra pearls ($68).

Where it works: Black-tie New Year’s Eve wedding.

Photo to take: In an Art Deco hotel lobby.

Ornate jacquard and brocade are on NET-A-PORTER’s fall list. Zola says black is fine at a New Year’s wedding if it’s embellished, and the beaded waist does that.

Blue and cream (looks 16 and 17)

16. Blue velvet halter midi for a winter engagement party

Buy it: Maeve Jamie Velvet Halter Midi Dress in Blue, $188 to $198 (a sale price of $141 to $148.50 showed on the listing), XXS to XL in Standard, Petite and Plus.

Wear it with: Doen Giulia velvet kitten heels in Cobalto ($348), the ASOS light brown faux fur jacket worn as a shrug ($94.99) and BaubleBar Elizabeth earrings ($48).

Where it works: Holiday engagement party.

Photo to take: In a frosted winter garden with fairy lights.

Icy blue is up 50 percent on Pinterest and Bridgerton blue 100 percent. I couldn’t confirm this shade is icy, so call it blue in your captions until you see it.

17. Cream cable sweater dress for Christmas at home

Buy it: A&F Madeline Cable Mini Sweater Dress in Cream, $85 to $100 (also in Maroon, Deep Navy and Dark Coffee).

Wear it with: Sheertex cherry tights ($49), Doen Eleni chocolate suede bow flats ($298), an Accessorize burgundy velvet bow ($21) and BaubleBar Adeline pearls ($22).

Where it works: Family Christmas dinner (never a wedding event).

Photo to take: A kitchen-table candid with a dried orange garland.

Cream is the colour for tonal looks this winter, and dried orange garland DIY is up 100 percent on Pinterest. Cream reads as bridal, so keep this one for family.

Plus size and petite

For plus sizes, the ASOS Curve crimson maxi (look 1) and plum satin midi (look 9) are both $75 or less, and the Lulus chocolate satin gown (look 13) runs to 3X. The Maeve blue velvet halter (look 16) comes in plus and petite fits, and Rixo’s sizes go up to UK 26.

For petites, the Abercrombie ruby mini (look 2) comes in petite lengths, and the ASOS Petite velvet tea dress (look 5) and the Lace and Beads emerald corset mini (look 11) are cut for petite frames. I couldn’t find a petite holiday maxi that I hadn’t already used elsewhere, so for a gown, look at petite-fit midis like look 16.

Before you order

Rixo shows no currency on its site, and its prices are probably in pounds. A few Lulus and Anthropologie prices differed between the listing and the product page, and the Abercrombie price may or may not include a short promotion. The Lulus burgundy velvet is down to its last few in the smallest and largest sizes. Order early enough to return anything that doesn’t fit.

Where I’d start

If you have one dress to buy for the whole season, make it velvet in burgundy or emerald, like the Lulus Florentina (look 10). Wear it to the office party with tights and flats. Then add heels and a long coat for an engagement party or a winter wedding. That’s most of your December in one $75 dress.

About the research

I used Hypebeast’s fall 2026 runway review, NET-A-PORTER’s fall 2026 trends, Who What Wear’s fall 2026 colour and dress trend reports, Marie Claire on the drop waist, Harper’s Bazaar’s December 2025 holiday runway guide, Elle’s holiday party guide, Pinterest Predicts 2026 via National Jeweler and FashionUnited, Pinterest’s 2026 Wedding Trends Report, The Knot, Zola, WeddingWire, Parade, The Zoe Report, MasterClass, Seattle Magazine and the Emily Post Institute, and the product pages at ASOS, Abercrombie, Staud, Lulus, Rixo, Anthropologie, Hill House Home, Hutch, Doen, Rothy’s, Steve Madden, Sheertex, BaubleBar and Lele Sadoughi, checked on November 6, 2026. I didn’t find a 2026 holiday party dress guide from the big magazines yet, and most dress code guides are a few years old.
