26 Semi-Formal Dresses for a Wedding (Fall 2026 to Summer 2027)

At least once a month a guest asks me what semi-formal actually means. Usually she has a lovely floor-length gown in her basket and a nagging feeling it is too much. Her feeling is right. After thirty years of planning weddings, I can tell you semi-formal is the dress code guests get wrong most often, in both directions.

So here is the short answer, followed by twenty-six dresses that fit it: thirteen for fall and winter weddings, and thirteen for spring and summer 2027.

What semi-formal means for a wedding guest

Think knee, tea or midi length, or a dressy jumpsuit, in a nice fabric such as crepe, chiffon or silk, with very little sparkle. The Knot says fabric is what really separates semi-formal from cocktail. A floor-length formal gown is too much. A mini is usually too casual, although a flowy printed maxi can work at a summer garden or beach wedding.

Time of day. Daytime weddings call for lighter colours and fabrics. Evening weddings can go darker and richer, in velvet or satin.

Venue. A ballroom leans dressier. A barn, garden or beach means block heels, wedges or flat sandals, because stilettos sink. My 10 best comfortable wedding shoes are a good place to start.

Colours to skip. Never white, ivory, cream or champagne, or a pale print that could look white in photos. Avoid the bridesmaids’ colour. Black is fine at most Western weddings, but skip it at Hindu, Sikh and Chinese celebrations, and avoid all-red at Indian and Chinese weddings.

Houses of worship. Choose a hem below the knee and bring a wrap or jacket to cover your shoulders during the ceremony.

Fall and winter 2026 (dresses 1 to 13)

1. Merlot velvet wrap midi

The dress: a deep merlot velvet wrap midi dress with a surplice V-neck, long fitted sleeves, a side self-tie at the waist and a soft flared hem.

Wear it to: Evening restaurant or hotel reception, November to February.

Velvet and merlot are the two words I hear most from fall guests this year. A wrap waist adjusts to you, which matters after a long dinner.

Hair and makeup: glossy Hollywood waves, with an illuminating base and a berry lip matched to the dress.

2. Chocolate satin cowl slip

The dress: a dark chocolate brown bias-cut satin midi slip dress with a draped cowl neckline and thin spaghetti straps, with a black tuxedo blazer over her shoulders.

Wear it to: City rooftop or restaurant, October to November evenings.

Brown is one of the defining colours of the season. A tuxedo blazer over the shoulders makes a slip dress look right for an evening wedding.

Hair and makeup: a sleek low bun, with a bronze-gold smoky lid and a nude-brown lip.

3. Glass-slipper blue cape midi

The dress: an icy glass-slipper blue crepe-satin midi dress, clearly blue, with a boat neckline, a sleeveless bodice and a floaty chiffon cape falling from the shoulders to the elbows, a fitted natural waist and an A-line skirt.

Wear it to: Afternoon estate or country-club wedding, September to November.

This icy blue is the fresh colour of fall, and capes are the detail editors keep mentioning for both seasons. Make sure the blue is clearly blue so it never reads as white in photos.

Hair and makeup: an updo with face-framing bangs, with cloud-soft skin and a silver shimmer lid.

4. Amber jacquard corset tea dress

The dress: a golden amber and bronze floral jacquard tea-length dress with a square neckline, a structured corset bodice with wide straps, a pointed basque waist and a full A-line skirt, with a black velvet blazer.

Wear it to: Late-afternoon country club, October to December.

A corset bodice with a basque waist is the bridal trend that crossed over to guests. Tea length keeps it firmly semi-formal.

Hair and makeup: a bouncy ’90s blowout, with soft winged liner and a warm rose lip.

5. Plum one-shoulder drape

The dress: a plum crepe midi dress with a one-shoulder asymmetric neckline, a draped sash across the bodice, ruching at the side waist and a modest side slit.

Wear it to: Vineyard or barn evening, September to October.

A one-shoulder drape in plum feels special without a single sequin. For a barn or ranch wedding, my barn and ranch wedding attire ideas have more options.

Hair and makeup: a side-swept low ponytail, with plum-toned eyeshadow and a glossy lip.

6. Navy lace midi with sleeves

The dress: a navy corded lace midi dress over a navy lining, below the knee, with a high bateau neckline, long lined lace sleeves, a fitted waist with a thin self-belt and a scalloped hem.

Wear it to: Church or synagogue ceremony, fall or winter daytime.

Lined lace with sleeves is the dress I recommend for a church or synagogue ceremony. Nothing is sheer and nothing needs a wrap.

Hair and makeup: a polished half-up, half-down style, with a soft natural face and waterproof mascara.

7. Sapphire satin bishop sleeve

The dress: a sapphire blue heavy satin midi dress with a deep V-neck, full bishop sleeves gathered into buttoned cuffs, a tie belt at the waist and a straight skirt.

Wear it to: Winter evening restaurant or hotel, December to February.

Sapphire satin with full bishop sleeves is dramatic enough for a December evening. A red lip finishes it.

Hair and makeup: a sleek middle-part chignon, with an illuminating base and a classic red lip.

8. Black halter column for a city wedding

The dress: a black stretch crepe midi column dress with a high halter neck, sleeveless, with an open keyhole back and no waist seam.

Wear it to: Modern city or gallery wedding at night.

Black works for a modern city wedding at night. Skip it at Hindu, Sikh, Chinese and some Irish weddings, where it reads as mourning.

Hair and makeup: a slicked-back party ponytail, with cloud skin, graphic liner and a nude lip.

9. Olive plisse midi

The dress: an olive green crepe de chine midi dress with a mock-wrap V-neck, three-quarter sleeves, an elasticated waist and a knife-pleated skirt.

Wear it to: Daytime garden or barn ceremony, September to October.

Olive and pleats are made for a daytime autumn ceremony. The elasticated waist is comfortable through the whole day.

Hair and makeup: loose natural curls, with bronzed skin and terracotta blush.

10. Terracotta scarf-neck midi

The dress: a terracotta crepe midi dress with a scarf neckline whose long tie drapes over one shoulder, long sleeves, a fitted waist and an A-line skirt.

Wear it to: Outdoor autumn daytime ceremony, October.

Scarf necklines are one of the most talked-about guest details for 2026. Terracotta looks lovely against autumn leaves.

Hair and makeup: a low textured chignon, with a copper shimmer lid and a peachy lip.

11. Brown and blue polka dot tea dress

The dress: a chocolate brown crepe tea-length dress with oversized powder-blue polka dots, a V-neck, flutter short sleeves, a self-tie waist and a ruffled hem.

Wear it to: Early-fall garden or brunch wedding, September.

Polka dots are back, and brown with powder blue is a softer take. It suits an early-fall garden or brunch wedding.

Hair and makeup: a half-up style with a clip, with pastel pink blush and a fresh lip balm.

12. Cappuccino off-shoulder satin

The dress: a cappuccino brown satin midi dress, clearly darker than champagne, with a straight off-the-shoulder neckline, short banded sleeves, a ruched corset waist and a demure front slit, with a faux-fur stole.

Wear it to: Winter evening reception, November to January.

Cappuccino satin is warm and rich. Keep it clearly darker than champagne so nobody mistakes it for bridal. For more cosy details, see my winter wedding ideas.

Hair and makeup: Hollywood waves, with a monochrome brown eye, cheek and lip.

13. Forest velvet faux-wrap

The dress: a forest green stretch velvet midi dress with a faux-wrap V-neck, long sleeves, a wrap-tie waist and an A-line skirt with side pockets.

Wear it to: Winter hotel or restaurant evening, December to February.

Stretch velvet in a faux-wrap with pockets is the most comfortable winter guest dress I know. For curvy guests, my plus-size cocktail dresses have even more shapes.

Hair and makeup: a voluminous ’90s blowout, with a sheer glow base and emerald-gold shimmer.

Spring and summer 2027 (dresses 14 to 26)

14. Luminous blue halter backless

The dress: a bright royal blue satin midi dress with a halter neck tied at the nape, sleeveless, with an open back to the waist and a bias-cut skirt.

Wear it to: Summer rooftop evening reception.

WGSN named a bright royal blue its colour of 2027, and backless halter ties were all over the spring runways. Save this one for an evening reception.

Hair and makeup: a sleek high ponytail, with a bronzed glow and a coral lip.

15. Apple green asymmetric drape

The dress: an apple green crepe midi dress with an asymmetric cowl neckline draped to one side, wide straps and ruching at the side waist.

Wear it to: Afternoon garden wedding, May to June.

Apple green is one of the fresh greens for spring. An asymmetric drape makes a simple dress look designed.

Hair and makeup: a soft half-up style, with cloud skin and peach blush.

16. Watermelon colour-block

The dress: a watermelon pink satin midi dress with a square neckline, wide straps, a fitted waist cinched by a contrast apple green satin sash tied at the back, and an A-line skirt.

Wear it to: Summer garden evening or estate reception.

Pink with green was one of the colour pairings of the New York spring shows. The contrast sash makes the whole dress.

Hair and makeup: an updo with face-framing bangs, with a pink flush blush and a glossy pink lip.

17. Pistachio tiered chiffon

The dress: a pistachio green chiffon midi dress with a V-neck, flutter sleeves, a smocked waist and three ruffled tiers.

Wear it to: Vineyard or garden daytime wedding, April to June.

Tiers and pistachio are made for a sunny vineyard. Wear wedges so you don’t sink into the lawn.

Hair and makeup: loose natural curls, with pastel pink blush and a tinted balm.

18. Powder blue feather-hem slip

The dress: a powder blue bias-cut satin midi slip dress with a straight neckline, thin straps and a short dyed-to-match feather trim at the hem only.

Wear it to: Spring evening restaurant or hotel wedding.

Feather trim reads festive without going formal. Keep the feathers at the hem so they stay out of your dinner.

Hair and makeup: glossy Hollywood waves, with an illuminating base and a soft rose lip.

19. Sky and navy stripe midi

The dress: a sky blue and navy bold stripe linen-blend midi dress with a square neckline, short sleeves, a fitted waist and a button-through front.

Wear it to: Daytime summer backyard or garden wedding.

Bold stripes were all over the spring runways. Check that the bridesmaids aren’t in sky blue before you buy.

Hair and makeup: a high top knot, with a bronzy SPF glow and natural brows.

20. Apricot floral satin maxi for the beach

The dress: an apricot and sage floral-print satin flowy maxi dress with a V-neck, flutter sleeves and a tie waist.

Wear it to: Beach or resort summer wedding.

A flowy printed maxi is the one long dress that works at a semi-formal beach wedding. My beach wedding guest dresses guide has more ideas.

Hair and makeup: beachy waves, with glowy bronzed skin and a peach lip.

21. Clay drop-waist pleated midi

The dress: a pink-toned clay brown crepe midi dress with a scoop neck, short sleeves, a low drop waist, a pleated skirt and a low scoop back.

Wear it to: Spring afternoon city or garden wedding.

The drop waist is one of the biggest shapes of the moment, and this pink-toned clay brown is a spring 2027 colour.

Hair and makeup: a low bun with face-framing pieces, with an underpainted contour and a rosy-brown lip.

22. Lilac lace with a lace belt

The dress: a french lilac lined lace midi dress, deeper than pale lilac, below the knee, with a modest V-neck, lace short sleeves and a fitted waist with a lace belt, with a soft lilac wrap over her shoulders.

Wear it to: Spring church ceremony.

Lilac lace with sleeves is right for a spring church ceremony. Choose a lilac deep enough that it never looks white in photos.

Hair and makeup: a polished half-up style, with pastel pink blush and waterproof mascara.

23. Butter yellow jumpsuit

The dress: a butter yellow silk crepe ankle-length wide-leg jumpsuit with a V-neck, sleeveless, with a self-belted waist, with nude ankle-strap sandals.

Wear it to: Garden afternoon or city-hall reception, April to June.

A dressy jumpsuit is fully semi-formal. On a petite frame, an ankle-length leg and a high ponytail add height.

Hair and makeup: a high ponytail for height, with a glow base and a coral-pink lip.

24. Orange fringe-hem midi

The dress: a saturated orange crepe sleeveless sheath midi dress with a high round neck, a fitted waist and swinging silk fringe at the hem.

Wear it to: Summer evening reception with dancing.

Fringe at the hem moves every time you dance. This is the dress for a reception with a band.

Hair and makeup: a party ponytail, with a bronzed glow and a coral lip.

25. Peach chiffon for a Chinese banquet

The dress: a peach chiffon midi dress with a round neckline, flutter cap sleeves, an empire waist and a softly pleated skirt.

Wear it to: Chinese wedding tea ceremony or banquet.

At a Chinese wedding, avoid red, which belongs to the bride, and black. Soft pastels like peach are a respectful, pretty choice.

Hair and makeup: a smooth low chignon, with soft peach blush and a sheer pink lip.

26. Hot pink midi for an Indian sangeet

The dress: a hot pink silk chiffon midi dress with a V-neck edged in gold-thread embroidery, three-quarter sleeves, a fitted embroidered waistband and a matching chiffon dupatta-style scarf.

Wear it to: Indian sangeet or reception.

At an Indian sangeet, bright colour is welcome. Avoid white, black and all-red, and bring the scarf for any religious ceremony.

Hair and makeup: Hollywood waves, with winged liner, gold shadow and a berry lip.

How to finish the look

Keep it to a midi, a block heel or a flat, a small clutch that holds your phone, a lipstick and a card, and one piece of statement jewellery. Add a wrap or blazer in spring and a faux-fur stole or velvet blazer in winter. Wear a little more makeup than usual, since makeup fades in photos, and finish with setting spray.

If you only wear an outfit once, it costs the average guest about $137. A rich solid colour like merlot, forest green or sapphire can go to three weddings with different shoes. Renting is another good option for a single event.
