At a wedding I planned last spring, a guest in a pleated powder-blue cape dress danced with the bride’s grandfather for three songs straight. Later she told me it was the first wedding where she hadn’t spent the evening tugging at her dress. She had picked it for one reason: it was comfortable from the ceremony to the last song.
That is what I look for when I help plus-size guests choose. After thirty years of planning weddings, I’ve learned the dress that photographs best is the one you forget you’re wearing. Here are thirty-two of them in sizes up to 40: fifteen for fall and winter, and seventeen for spring and summer 2027.
Comfort first: what plus-size stylists recommend
Support without a strapless bra. Stylist Sophie Strauss calls a strapless bra on a long wedding day a nightmare. Look for a boned bodice or a dress with a built-in bra, or wear a bodysuit underneath.
Stop chafing before it starts. Anti-chafe slip shorts from brands like Thigh Society or Snag make a long, warm day far more comfortable.
Sleeves that are part of the dress. Flutter, cape and sheer sleeves give arm coverage without the heat of a cardigan. A light wrap works better than a cardigan, too, because it comes off easily.
Size by the bust. Use each brand’s own chart, size for the bust in structured dresses, and have the waist taken in. Bodices with princess seams are the easiest to tailor. Order early, because extended sizes sell out first.
Shoes you can dance in. Choose block heels or wedges, go wide-fit if you need it and a half size up for swelling, and tuck flats in your bag. My 10 best comfortable wedding shoes are all dance-floor tested.
Renting? Nuuly rents occasion dresses in sizes 16 to 40 for $98 a month. Most other rental services stop at a US 22 or 24.
Fall and winter 2026 (dresses 1 to 15)
1. Oxblood crepe column
The dress: a deep oxblood heavy stretch crepe floor-length column gown with a wide-strap V-neck, sleeveless, with soft side ruching and no waist seam, with a matching silk-crepe wrap.

Wear it to: Black tie, hotel ballroom, November to February.
Why it works: The stretch column moves with you and has no zip to fight. Look for this style at ELOQUII.
A floor-length column in stretch crepe is the easiest black-tie dress I know. The matching wrap covers your shoulders in a cold ballroom.
Hair and makeup: a sleek low chignon, with an illuminating base and an oxblood lip.
2. Teal stretch-velvet midi
The dress: a deep peacock teal stretch velvet midi dress with a surplice V-neck, long fitted sleeves and a ruched waist panel.

Wear it to: Cocktail, city restaurant or hotel, December to February.
Why it works: Ruching adds texture without cling, and long sleeves keep you warm. Look for this style at ELOQUII.
Teal velvet is one of the richest colours of the season, and the ruched panel gives texture where you want it.
Hair and makeup: a voluminous ’90s blowout, with a gold shimmer lid and a berry lip.
3. Burgundy crepe midi with pockets
The dress: a burgundy stretch crepe below-knee midi dress with a square neckline, elbow sleeves, a seamed natural waist and an A-line skirt with side pockets.

Wear it to: Semi-formal, restaurant or rooftop, October to November.
Why it works: Room through the hips, plus real pockets. Look for this style at Universal Standard.
Universal Standard makes this shape up to size 40. Burgundy and pockets make it the dress you’ll wear to three weddings.
Hair and makeup: a polished half-up style, with terracotta blush and a brick-rose lip.
4. Burnt-mustard surplice wrap
The dress: a burnt mustard matte jersey midi wrap dress with a surplice V-neck, flutter sleeves, a true wrap waist with a side tie and a flared hem.

Wear it to: Semi-formal, barn or vineyard, September to October.
Why it works: The tie adjusts and the wrap won’t gape. Look for this style at Torrid.
A jersey wrap with a modesty snap is comfortable all day. Burnt mustard looks lovely against autumn vines.
Hair and makeup: loose natural curls, with bronzed skin, a copper lid and a nude-peach lip.
5. Emerald beaded midi
The dress: an emerald beaded mesh midi dress over a matching lining with an illusion V-neck, sheer beaded three-quarter sleeves, an empire seam and a straight skirt.

Wear it to: Cocktail, country club evening, November to December.
Why it works: The lined bodice supports, and the seam sits under the bust. Look for this style at Adrianna Papell.
Beading on a lined mesh dress catches the light without feeling heavy. It’s right for a cocktail evening.
Hair and makeup: Hollywood waves, with winged liner, gold-green shimmer and a nude-rose lip.
6. Garnet off-shoulder maxi
The dress: a garnet satin-back crepe floor-length maxi with an off-the-shoulder wrap neckline over a boned inner bodice, short banded sleeves, a tie waist and a front leg slit.

Wear it to: Formal, estate or hotel, December holiday season.
Why it works: The boned bodice means no strapless bra. Look for this style at City Chic.
Garnet is festive for a December wedding. Skip red at Indian and Chinese weddings, where it belongs to the bride.
Hair and makeup: an updo with face-framing bangs, with matte skin and a garnet lip.
7. Gold metallic halter gown
The dress: an antique gold metallic plisse floor-length gown with a high halter neck, sleeveless, with an elastic-back empire waist and a fluid pleated skirt.

Wear it to: Black tie, New Year’s or winter ballroom.
Why it works: The halter frames the shoulders and the pleats move when you dance. Look for this style at Adrianna Papell.
A gold halter gown is made for New Year’s Eve. This style stops at 24W, so for larger sizes look for a similar halter at ELOQUII or Kiyonna. For more party ideas, see my plus-size cocktail dresses.
Hair and makeup: a sleek high ponytail, with a bronze-gold smoky eye and a sheer gloss.
8. Silver sequin empire wrap midi
The dress: a silver sequin stretch-mesh midi dress with a wrap V-neck, sheer flutter sleeves, an empire waist and a flared skirt.
Wear it to: Cocktail or formal, New Year’s Eve reception, December to January.

Why it works: The skirt skims from under the bust. Look for this style at Mac Duggal.
Silver sequins on stretch mesh move with you. The empire waist keeps it comfortable through dinner.
Hair and makeup: a party ponytail, with an icy silver lid and a pink-nude lip.
9. Chocolate drop-waist maxi
The dress: a chocolate brown matte jersey maxi dress with a round neckline, long sleeves, a dropped hip seam and a knife-pleated skirt.

Wear it to: Semi-formal, vineyard or estate, October to November.
Why it works: No waistband digging in while you sit. Look for this style at ELOQUII.
A drop waist in soft jersey is a 2026 shape with no waistband to dig in. Chocolate brown is the colour of the season.
Hair and makeup: a low textured bun, with a monochrome brown eye, cheek and lip.
10. Olive asymmetric draped knit
The dress: an olive green stretch knit maxi dress with a one-shoulder asymmetric neckline, a draped panel across the bodice, one cap sleeve, a ruched side waist and a pull-on fit.
Wear it to: Semi-formal, barn or garden afternoon, September to October.
Why it works: Pull-on stretch for a long day. Look for this style at ELOQUII.

A one-shoulder drape in olive feels special without a single sequin, and it pulls on without a zip.
Hair and makeup: a side-swept low ponytail, with a bronzy glow, olive-gold liner and a warm nude lip.
11. Black satin off-shoulder gown
The dress: a black duchess satin floor-length gown with an off-shoulder sweetheart neckline, short off-shoulder sleeves, a fitted waist and an A-line skirt.

Wear it to: Black tie, modern city venue, November to February.
Why it works: A smoothing slip underneath keeps satin from clinging. Look for this style at Torrid.
Black satin is classic for a city black-tie wedding. Skip black at Hindu, Sikh and Chinese ceremonies. My plus-size black wedding dresses show more ways to wear it.
Hair and makeup: glossy Hollywood waves, with a classic red lip and fine liner.
12. Deep plum sequin-lace gown
The dress: a deep plum sequin lace floor-length gown over a matching lining with a V-neck, sheer lace three-quarter sleeves, an empire waist and a soft A-line skirt.

13. Mossy green draped gown
The dress: a mossy forest green matte jersey floor-length gown with a soft cowl neckline, draped cap sleeves, a gathered side waist and a flowing column skirt.

14. Caramel long-sleeve V maxi
The dress: a caramel brown stretch jersey maxi dress with a modest V-neck, long sleeves, an elastic-gathered natural waist and side pockets.

Wear it to: Semi-formal, church or synagogue ceremony, November to February.
Why it works: Covered arms, pockets and knit stretch. Look for this style at Lane Bryant.
Covered arms, pockets and knit stretch are what I want at a church ceremony in January. Lane Bryant knits go up to size 40.
Hair and makeup: a polished half-up style, with a soft natural face and waterproof mascara.
15. Navy bow satin corset fit-and-flare
The dress: a navy stretch satin tea-length dress with an off-the-shoulder neckline and an oversized bow, sleeveless, with a boned stretch corset bodice, a lace-up back and a full fit-and-flare skirt.

Wear it to: Formal, country club afternoon, October to November.
Why it works: Boning spreads the support and the lace-up back adjusts. Look for this style at Alfred Sung.
A bow at the shoulder and a corset back that laces to your fit are very 2026. For shapewear under structured dresses, my guide to shapewear can help.
Hair and makeup: a bouncy ’90s blowout, with cloud skin, navy tightline and a pink lip.
Spring and summer 2027 (dresses 16 to 32)
16. Butter-yellow square-neck lace
The dress: a butter yellow lace knee-to-midi dress over a matching lining, clearly yellow and never cream, with a square neckline, short lace sleeves, a fitted waist and a flared skirt.

Wear it to: Cocktail, garden afternoon, April to June.
Why it works: The square neck gives structure. Look for this style at June + Vie.
Butter yellow is a lovely spring colour, but choose a shade that is clearly yellow so it never looks cream in photos.
Hair and makeup: an updo with face-framing bangs, with pastel pink blush and a glossy lip.
17. Apple-green scarf-neck midi
The dress: an apple green crepe de chine midi dress with a high neckline and a long scarf tie draped over one shoulder, flutter cap sleeves, a self-tie waist and an A-line skirt.

Wear it to: Semi-formal, city or garden afternoon, May to June.
Why it works: The scarf gives shape without a fitted bodice. Look for this style at Never Fully Dressed.

Hair and makeup: a low textured chignon, with cloud skin, peach blush and tinted balm.
18. Apricot floral cape-back trapeze
The dress: an apricot and sage large-scale vintage floral georgette maxi with a bardot off-shoulder neckline over a built-in bra, a floaty cape falling down the back and a trapeze cut with no waist seam.

Wear it to: Semi-formal, vineyard or garden, June to August.
Why it works: The trapeze swings from the bust with airflow. Look for this style at ASOS Curve.
A cape falling down the back gives you movement without covering your arms. The trapeze cut keeps air moving on a hot day.
Hair and makeup: loose beachy waves, with a bronzed glow and a peach lip.
19. Powder-blue pleated cape maxi
The dress: a powder blue chiffon maxi dress with a V-neck, a sleeveless bodice with a sheer cape from shoulder to mid-back, a smocked natural waist and a sunray-pleated skirt.

Wear it to: Formal, garden or estate evening, May to July.
Why it works: The cape covers the arms without heat. Look for this style at ELOQUII.
This is the dress from my story. A sheer cape covers your arms without heat, and the pleats swing when you dance.
Hair and makeup: a half-up style with a bow, with cloud skin and a silver shimmer lid.
20. Brown-and-cream dot wrap maxi
The dress: a chocolate brown chiffon maxi with oversized cream polka dots, brown-dominant, a wrap V-neck, flutter sleeves, a tie waist and a ruffled hem.

Wear it to: Garden or semi-formal, daytime garden or brunch, April to June.
Why it works: The wrap adjusts and the maxi gives room through the hips. Look for this style at Yours.

21. Green floral pleated maxi
The dress: an emerald and leaf green floral georgette maxi dress with a V-neck, short flutter sleeves, an elasticated waist and a knife-pleated skirt.

Wear it to: Garden, countryside or barn daytime, May to July.

Wear it to: Garden, afternoon outdoor wedding, June to August.
Why it works: Nothing presses on the belly. Look for this style at Kiyonna.
An empire seam under the bust means nothing presses at the waist. Pistachio is one of the fresh greens for 2027.
Hair and makeup: a high top knot, with peach-pink blush and a clear gloss.
23. Lavender tulle flutter midi
The dress: a mid-tone lavender layered tulle midi dress over a jersey lining, deeper than pale lilac, with a sweetheart neckline, tulle flutter sleeves, a fitted waist and a full skirt.

Wear it to: Cocktail, spring evening reception, April to May.
Why it works: A stretch lining under soft tulle. Look for this style at ELOQUII.

Wear it to: Formal or semi-formal, hotel or garden evening, May to June.
Why it works: The faux wrap never gapes. Look for this style at ELOQUII.
Satin with puff sleeves and a faux wrap is very current. A smoothing slip underneath helps satin glide.

26. Sage satin flutter A-line
The dress: a sage green stretch satin floor-length A-line gown with a deep V-neck, flutter sleeves and a fitted natural waist with princess seams.

Wear it to: Formal, garden estate evening, May to June.
Why it works: Princess seams are easy to tailor. Look for this style at BHLDN.

Hair and makeup: an updo with face-framing bangs, with an illuminating base and a sage-gold lid.
27. Luminous-blue halter backless maxi
The dress: a bright royal blue satin maxi with a high halter neck, sleeveless, an open back to the waist and a pleated skirt from a natural waist.

Wear it to: Beach or destination, resort ceremony, June to September.

30. Aqua chiffon high-low surplice
The dress: an aqua turquoise chiffon high-low maxi with a surplice V-neck, flutter cap sleeves, an elastic-back waist and a floaty high-low hem.

Wear it to: Beach or destination, seaside or lakeside, June to August.
Why it works: Chiffon packs well and doesn’t crease. Look for this style at Torrid.

Caped sleeves cover your shoulders for a church ceremony without needing a wrap.
Hair and makeup: a polished half-up style, with a soft natural face and waterproof mascara.
Where I’d start
Start with dress 3 or dress 19. Both come in a wide size range and work for most semi-formal and formal weddings. Order early, size by the bust, and plan a quick visit to a tailor if you need one. Pack anti-chafe shorts and a pair of flats, and you’ll still be dancing when the band plays the last song.
