The best winter engagement photo I’ve ever seen was taken by accident. The couple had just finished their posed shots in a snowy park, the bride’s hands were frozen, and her fiancé took them in his and breathed on them to warm them up. The photographer kept shooting. That’s the one framed in their hallway now.
So this guide is about two things: what to wear, and how to look like yourselves while you wear it. Here are 18 complete winter engagement outfits, each with her dress, the coat, the boots, what your partner wears, where to shoot, hair and makeup, and a natural pose photographers swear by.
What’s trending for winter engagement photos
Velvet and satin maxis. Velvet, crepe, satin and long-sleeve maxis lead every winter guide, under a statement coat.
The coat is half the outfit. Stylist Elaine Yu calls the statement coat your key piece, and photographers remind couples that the coat will be in many of the photos.
Brown is the new colour. Pinterest’s wedding report shows chocolate brown up 451 percent, mocha up 551 percent and rust suits up 590 percent. Emerald, ruby, sapphire, burgundy and ivory still stand out against snow.
Drop waists and high necks. Drop waist searches rose 2,395 percent and high necklines 72 percent.
Night and blue hour. Blue hour photography is up more than 3,000 percent, and photographers expect more flash photos at night. Satin, velvet and sequins shine in both.
How to coordinate with your partner
The rule every stylist repeats is coordinated, not matching. Pick one colour family and let one of you wear the bold colour while the other stays in a solid from the same family. A good wool overcoat or peacoat, a turtleneck or a sweater over a shirt, and Chelsea boots work for almost every partner. For a dressier look, try a velvet blazer or a brown or rust suit.
City and night glam (outfits 1 to 5)
1. Open-back velvet in a hotel lobby
Her dress: A full-length halter velvet dress in a rayon and silk velvet, with an adjustable tie neck.

The back: An open back with ties and a short row of buttons at the low back.

Where to shoot: The lobby of a historic hotel with a marble floor and a brass-lit bar, shot with soft direct flash.

The pose: Slow dance. One photographer tells couples to dance like they’re in a cheesy rom-com, shot from a little distance so they forget the camera.
The open back with ties is the best back on this list, and it’s on final sale. The colour varies by listing, so check before you order.
2. Red velvet on a snowy blue-hour street

The matching gloves make this feel like an old film. David’s Bridal makes it in four colours.

Sequins catch sparklers like nothing else. Save this one for New Year’s.
Snowy outdoors (outfits 6 to 14)
6. Emerald velvet at the Christmas market

Hair and makeup: Vintage pinned curls under the veiled hat, with a soft rose lip and no pink blush.
The pose: Sharing a coat. He opens his overcoat and wraps it around her. This is my own take on the blanket wrap photographers love.

This is the cosiest outfit here. A piggyback always gets a real laugh.
Poses that don’t look posed
Photographers give prompts, not poses. A prompt is an action that sparks a reaction: walk toward me laughing, whisper something silly, kiss her forehead and hold it. The best frame usually comes just after, when you relax.
Keep touching. Stay close at the hips and keep a hand on each other. A gap between you looks stiff.
Don’t mirror each other. Matching stances, clenched fists and arms wrapped like a prom photo are the fastest way to look posed.
Forget the camera. Look at each other. Copying poses from social media is what makes couples freeze up.
Use the cold. Your breath shows below about 5°C. Ask for a light behind you and catch it on a slow exhale.
Warm each other up. Warming hands, sharing a blanket, holding cocoa together. These look romantic because they’re real.
Mind the light. Winter golden hour is roughly 4 to 6 pm, so start early. Sparklers work best at 36 inches long.
How to stay warm on the day
Cold couples look stiff, so warmth is part of the styling. Wear a thin thermal layer under the dress, keep hand warmers in your gloves and pockets, and bring a thermos of cocoa, a blanket and a friend to hold your coat. Bring waterproof boots if you plan to wear heels.
Boots. Over-the-knee boots are warm and long. Skip bulky sheepskin boots, which make ankles look heavy.
Accessories. Faux fur stoles, veiled hats, sheer or leather gloves, statement earrings, headbands and matching beanies all came up.
Hair and makeup in the cold
Start without the hat. Hats flatten hair, so put one on later in the shoot.
Fight static. Carry a dryer sheet and use low heat on your hair.
Choose creams. Cream or gel eyeshadow lasts better than powder in the cold. Use waterproof mascara and an ointment lip balm.
Skip pink blush. It can make you look cold, not flushed. Use a sheer bronzer instead.
Plus-size and petite options
ELOQUII’s velvet burnout maxi goes to size 32, Reformation’s Cavallo comes in petites and 14 to 24, Lulus’ velvet maxis go to 3X and the Mac Duggal cape gown runs to 24. For curves, A-line, wrap and empire waists in lined, opaque fabrics work best, with a belted longline coat. For more, see my plus-size cocktail dresses guide.
Where I’d start
Pick your location first, then the dress. For snow, go bold: red, emerald or burgundy velvet under a camel coat. For a city night, go satin or sequins with flash. Then plan two or three prompts you know will make you laugh, and keep your hands warm. The photos you’ll love most will be the ones in between.
