15 Engagement Dresses That Make the Ring the Second Prettiest Thing

I Spent Three Weeks Looking for the Right One

My best friend got engaged in February and panicked about what to wear. Not the wedding dress — the engagement dress. The one for the party, the photos, the announcement post. I helped her shop for three weeks and became obsessed with this category. The right engagement dress photographs like candlelight, fits like you could dance all night, and makes you feel like the main character. These 15 do all three.

The White Dresses That Actually Feel Bridal

1. Satin Cowl-Neck Midi — Reformation

Around $248 at Reformation. This is the engagement dress I’d pick if someone proposed tomorrow. The cowl neckline sits perfectly without a strapless bra, the bias-cut satin moves like liquid, and the midi length means you can walk and sit without fussing. My friend wore ivory to her rooftop engagement party and every photo looked like it belonged in a magazine. Only caveat: satin wrinkles, so steam it right before.

2. Lace Midi with Open Back — BHLDN

About $280 at BHLDN. The lace has real dimension — not that flat, cheap-looking lace you see everywhere. The open back is the detail that gets people. From the front it reads elegant and bridal. From the back it’s a genuine showstopper. Size up if you’re between.

3. Tiered Ruffle Midi — Anthropologie

Around $178. The movement on this dress is unreal for photos. Every tier catches light differently. It reads bridal without being too serious — perfect if your engagement party is more backyard than ballroom.

4. Simple Slip Dress — Lulus

Under $60. The bias-cut slip in ivory satin looks five times its price. Add a statement earring. The fabric is thinner than Reformation’s so you’ll want a slip underneath.

When You Don’t Want to Wear White (and You Don’t Have To)

5. Dusty Rose Velvet Midi — & Other Stories

Around $119 at & Other Stories. My favorite non-white engagement dress here. The velvet catches candlelight in a way that makes your skin glow. Fitted bodice with a flared midi skirt — flattering on every body type I’ve seen it on. Perfect for fall or winter. Gold jewelry, strappy heels, done.

6. Champagne Sequin Mini — Revolve

About $198 at Revolve. For the bride who wants sparkle. The champagne color reads bridal without being white, and the sequins catch every light in the room. Keep everything else minimal — the dress does the talking.

7. Sage Satin Wrap Midi — Abercrombie

Around $90. Sage green satin wrap that photographs beautifully outdoors. The color is unexpected but romantic — the pick if your shoot is in a garden.

8. Blush Lace A-Line — ASOS

About $75 at ASOS. Soft blush pink with delicate lace overlay. It reads romantic and bridal-adjacent without trying too hard. Runs a touch large in the bust — consider sizing down.

The Non-Dress Options That Still Feel Engaged

9. White Lace Co-Ord Set — Lulus

Around $85 for both pieces. Cropped lace top and matching midi skirt. Modern bridal energy without full-dress formality. You can rewear both separately, which I always think about.

10. Tailored White Jumpsuit — ASOS

About $95. Wide-leg, strapless, clean lines. For the bride who doesn’t do dresses. I wish the fabric was heavier — slightly see-through in direct sunlight.

What You Wear With It Matters as Much

11. Strappy Nude Heels — Steve Madden

Around $90. The heel that disappears into any outfit and makes your legs look endless. Nude works better than white for most engagement dress colors because it extends the line without competing.

12. Pearl Drop Earrings — Mejuri

About $98. The single accessory that says “I’m the bride” without a veil. Pearl drops read timeless in every photo angle.

13. Satin Clutch in Gold or Ivory — JW Pei

Around $60. A small structured clutch in gold or ivory completes the look. Fits your phone, a lipstick, and your ring box if you’re doing posed photos.

14. Delicate Gold Bracelet

Mejuri or Amazon dupes for $25–50. A thin gold chain bracelet on your ring hand draws the eye right where you want it. Subtle but effective for close-up ring shots.

15. Sheer Wrap or Cashmere Shawl

$30–80 depending on material. A sheer ivory wrap adds movement to photos. Cashmere in cream keeps you warm without hiding the dress.

What I Learned Helping My Best Friend Shop

Try the dress in lighting closest to your venue. Satin looks completely different in fluorescent light versus candlelight.

Photograph yourself from behind. The back matters as much as the front for engagement photos.

Don’t buy a dress you can’t sit in for three hours. Comfort isn’t optional.

Go Show Off That Ring

If I’m picking one, it’s the Reformation cowl-neck satin midi. But the & Other Stories dusty rose velvet is the one I can’t stop thinking about for a fall engagement party.

Save this to your engagement Pinterest board, send it to whoever just got proposed to, and tell me in the comments which one you’d pick. Subscribe so you don’t miss the next one.
